Media Type: Pen and Ink

Artists: Gene Hazelton All

The Hanna-Barbera studios produced the first prime-time animated series on television when they introduced The Flintstones. The series debuted on CBS in the fall of 1960, with characters reportedly modeled after The Honeymooners. The Flintstones was William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's most popular and successful creation, spawning movies and comic books. The strip began in 1961 after the great success of the TV series. The first artist on the strip was a veteran animator named Gene Hazelton, and the strip was distributed by McNaught Syndicate. When the syndicate went out of business in the mid 1980s, The Flintstones was picked up by Editors Press Service.
