NAST, THOMAS - political panel cartoon. Scratch-board painting.

Media Type: Mixed Media
Art Type: Strip Art
Artists: Thomas Nast All

You are viewing an original "en grisaille" painting by the American artist, Thomas Nast (1840-1902). The painting appears to have been painted with gouache or a similar opaque paint, possibly oil-based. The colors are simply gray and black with "scratching out" This wonderful political cartoon is entitled, "A Rough Scratch Sketch of Senatorial Courtesy" and appears to involve the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty. This was a treaty negotiated by the then Secretary of State, John Hay, and Lord Pauncefote of Preston in 1899 and 1900 which gave the United States the right to fortify and occupy the Panama Canal. There is also a bronze plaque at the bottom of the black wooden frame which reads, "Original Drawing by Thos. Nast. Presented by W.K. Bixby". From my researches, I have discovered that W.K. Bixby was a philanthropist and art patron in St. Louis around the turn of the Nineteenth Century. It is quite possible this was an illustration for a magazine and was painted between 1899 and 1902. Thomas Nast is considered the father of the American political cartoon. Born in Landau, Germany, in 1840, he moved with his parents to New York City in 1849. During the American Civil War, he was an illustrator for Harper's Weekly and was anti-war in terms of his drawings. Later on he covered Garibaldi's campaign to unify Italy. He died of yellow fever in Ecuador in 1902. This original painting by Nast is in remarkably good condition with no noticeable tears.
