KELLY, WALT - Uncle Pogo So-So Stories (1953) pg 13 Albert as Mike Hammer

Media Type: Pen and Ink
Art Type: Interior Page
Artists: Walt Kelly All

Walt Kelly - Original Art for Uncle Pogo's So-So Stories, "The Bloody Drip of Mucky Spleen", page 13 (Simon & Schuster, 1953).
Mickey Spillane, hardboiled author of such modern classics as I, The Jury, My Gun is Quick, and Kiss Me, Deadly, has been a favorite subject for parody over the years. Everyone from Daffy Duck to Firesign Theater have taken a shot at Spillane and his best-known character, Mike Hammer. But few have done so with such wit and skill as Walt Kelly, in his first published volume of new Pogo material, Uncle Pogo's So-So Stories. Albert Alligator stars as Meat Hamburg, private detective, and Churchy LaFemme appears as Tundra, the telephone girl ("She was called the telephone girl because, in the proper light, she looked like one. A telephone, I mean.") in this brilliant spoof of Spillane's over-the-top prose.
Beautifully rendered and in excellent condition, this page measures approximately 11" x 15.5" overall. There is some evidence of blue-pencil layouts, which is typical for Kelly originals.
Much scarcer than the daily strips, Kelly's book material is highly prized by collectors of this trend-setting artist.
