Johnny Gruelle GRUELLE, JOHNNY - Raggedy Ann Sunday prototype. Only known example! Raggedy Ann brought to life by witch! circa 1918 to 1920
Cartoonist Gruelle created the Raggedy Ann doll U.S. Patent D47,789, dated September 7, 1915. In 1918, the Volland Company published the first Raggedy Ann Stories. Gruelle then created a series of popular Raggedy Ann books with the dolls. An early or the first Sunday tryout with Gruelle's real-life children, Marcella (who tragically died at age 13) and her younger brother Worth image area is 19.25" x 21.25".
