OLIPHANT, PATRICK - Sunday Punk Sunday 6/17 1984 , Punk the Penguin meets Bloom County's Opus

Artists: Pat Oliphant All This is a key example of Pat Oliphant's short-lived Sunday strip based on his diminutive political comics commentator, Punk the penguin. In this original strip dated 6-17-84, Oliphant takes a swipe at Berke Breathed, whose Bloom County strip was wildly popular at that time. Oliphant was convinced that Breathed had based Opus the penguin on Oliphant's Punk. This feud continued up to 1987 when Breathed won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and Oliphant published a public and lengthy denouncement of the award and Breathed. Breathed replied in a week-long series of strips in 1988. In the days before the Internet, literary feuds developed over years! This critical "first shot" strip is produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 18" x 12.5". Page has slight toning in margins. Signed and inscribed by Oliphant in the lower margin. In Excellent condition. Also includes a detailed color guide in onion skin for the strip, in Excellent condition. Also includes a Universal Press Syndicate folder for the strip, which was sent to papers for consideration. Inside the folder were sample strips.
