OTTO MESSMER (1892 - 1983) began working as an animator at the Pat Sullivan Studios in 1915. In 1919, he solely created the first four minute Felix the Cat (initially called Master Tom) cartoon. The character maintained its popularity thoughout the silent era of animation and was introduced by Messner as a newspaper comic strip in 1923, which he worked on until 1954. Messner began drawing Felix the Cat for the comic books in 1941 and did so until 1955.
