JOHN CULLEN MURPHY
Big Ben Bolt (1954)
original Sunday page comic strip art
india ink on heavyweight paper, art image size 16" x 22.5" on 17.75" x 24.25" sheet

This is the original final drawing by artist John Cullen Murphy for the Sunday comic strip episode of Big Ben Bolt that was published in newspapers on July 4, 1954. It features title character Ben Bolt, who has apparently been 'kidnapped' by oil and cattle baron Nero Bentley to his empire in the west to marry his daughter Eugenie.
Writer Elliot Caplin and artist John Cullen Murphy created Big Ben Bolt in 1950; it first appeared as a daily strip and the Sunday feature was added in 1952. Mr. Murphy continued as the artist until 1971 when he left to draw Prince Valiant with Hal Foster.
This original is signed "John Cullen Murphy" by the artist in the final panel. King Features Syndicate copyright label appears in the last panel. The artwork was drawn on three rows of panels that were cleanly mounted to the larger sheet.
