John Dempsey

DEMPSEY, JOHN - Playboy Magazine January 1961, looks like a pretty big mistake at the calendar printing factory

Media Type: Paint - Watercolor
Art Type: Splash Page
Artists: John Dempsey Painter

John Dempsey Playboy Magazine January 1961 cartoon original art (Playboy Enterprises, 1961).
Dempsey, long a mainstay gagman for Playboy, prepared this hilarious, wordlessly eloquent, comedy-of-errors to mark the Christmas season of 1960. (The January 1961 issue would have arrived during November-December.) Seems somebody made a goof at the calendar-printing company, and two clients are none too pleased. Brilliant stuff here, with an unerring sense of color design to define the contrasting environments.
Ink and opaque watercolors over graphite on Bristol board.
Image area, 9.5" x 12", framed to 18.25" x 20.25". Excellent condition.
