From 1975 to 1981, Hostess Snack Cakes ran an advertising campaign that featured comic book characters. Across multiple publishers, with pretty much any and all possible characters. These ads are infamously remembered for the silly situations, which is entirely what I enjoy about them. Crime fighters often tossed Hostess treats to (or at!) criminals in order to subdue them.
The ads ran in DC, Marvel, Harvey, Archie, and Gold Key comics. The ads began on a bi-monthly basis and generally appeared in the entire line of comics for each company. By 1976, there were multiple different Hostess Advertisement strips each month. The lead feature character of the comic did not appear in that comic’s ad, which it pretty interesting. For example, if a Superman Hostess Strip was scheduled, an alternate strip appeared in the Superman family titles. In the later years of the campaign, some older strips were reused months after their original appearance.
There were 352 known ads from DC, Marvel, Harvey, Archie, and Gold Key. So…I am not going to run out any time soon, in our Twitter feature. I am missing about 6, just so you all know. So enjoy the ads and remember…you get a big delight in every bite of Hostess Snack Cakes.
