The Village Voice strip: In early 1976, the New York alternative newsweekly hired R. Crumb to create a full-page, weekly comic strip starring his most famous character, Mr. Natural. The strip ran for 40 weeks. The storyline: The comics followed Mr. Natural's adventures, including a period where he gets institutionalized by a disillusioned Flakey Foont. Foont and his wife, having abandoned their hippie past, are living a normal life but feel guilty after committing Mr. Natural.
Compilation: The Mr. Natural strip that ran in the Village Voice was later collected and published as a stand-alone comic book, Mr. Natural #3, by Kitchen Sink Press in 1977.

The art was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 8.5". Matted to 17" x 11.75".
