Clifford Berryman (1869-1949) started off as a cartoonist for the Washington Post, spending the vast majority of his career at the Washington Star. Berryman was one of the nation’s best known political cartoonists, but his greatest claim to fame was the creation of his 1902 cartoon that spawned the Teddy Bear, after Teddy Roosevelt. Specialty cartoon art featuring a self-portrait *and* a Teddy Bear. Berryman’s friend Fred had sent him a copy of the British cartoonist David Low's book of political cartoons. Low was one of the most noted political cartoonists of his day and absolutely hated by Hitler. The Teddy Bear notes, "Fred, that's all Cliff's done since you sent him that book of cartoons", as Berryman pictures himself on the floor, reading his book next to his grandson.
