Goldberg practically invented the idiom of aggressive slapstick cartooning and bizarre comic-strip dialogue, with a degree of influence that would spread to the movies and beyond. (His and Ben Stoloff's 1930 film, Soup to Nuts, introduced the Three Stooges to Hollywood.) By 1951, as pictured here, Goldberg had become a Grey Eminence of the funnypapers but remained as goofy as he had been in the early days. The present selection is a typically absurd Goldberg Invention -- an overcomplicated method of performing a simple chore. Goldberg makes snide topical references to Soviet dictator Josef Stalin (left), and to scandal-prone athlete Eleanor Holm (third figure from right).
